Description

On the night of January 26 to 27, 2015, a relatively large asteroid passed very close to Earth, just 1.2 million km (3 times the distance from Earth to the Moon). Asteroid 2004 BL86 was discovered in 2004 by the project LINEAR that search for objects close to Earth. This passage should be the closest to Earth to be made by a known object until the passage of asteroid 1999 AN10, in the year 2027. For asteroid 2004 BL86 it will be the closest passage to Earth in the next 200 years. Radar images indicate that the asteroid 2004 BL86 is expected to have a diameter of about 300 meters, is oval and has a moon that orbits it. The shape of the moon is not known, but it appears to have a diameter between 50 and 100 meters and with an orbital period of 13.80 +/- 0.05 hours. Observations of the light curve indicate that the asteroid rotates on itself in about 5 hours.
